HIKING TIPS IN THE GASTEIN VALLEY
Time: approx. 75 minutes.
The walk starts at the hotel Grüner Baum. The path follows across a steep southerly sloping walk, with great views to the end of the Kötschachtal valley, to the Tischler glaciers, to the end of the Böckstein valley and the Gastein valley to the north. An alternative route is to walk a short distance along the road leading to café Gamskar, talking the marked path to the right and up through the forest to the Poserhöhe - an extremely worthwhile destination with good alpine titbits and a small playground for the kids!
Prossau (1,271 m)
Time: Grüner Baum - Prossau alpine hut, approx. 75 minutes.
Turn left at the front door and take the footpath to the hotel Grüner Baum (15/20 min). From there, walk along the road towards the end of the valley. The "painters corner" to your right, with its romantic old farm buildings in front of some impressive views of the glaciers- “Tischlergruppe”. Following the road you will pass a memorial site, to commemorate the avalanche disaster in 1951, crossing the river, towering under hugh granite rocks you reach the “Himmelwand" hut. Through the thick forest, like a massive pyramid, the “Bocksteinkogel" appears. Half an hour after the "Grüner Baum" a small path to the Reedsee branches off to the right. We, however, continue further to the alpine hut Prossau. From the Prossau we recommend to continue a further 30 min. to the end of the Kötschachtal valley where numerous waterfalls, fed from the Tischlerkar glaciers, become visible.
